Paris: 25–30 avril 1887. 4to, later brown quarter calf with marbled sides; spine with four raised bands, ruled in gilt; two red calf spine labels, lettered in gilt. ii, 164 pages; 1009 lots; 37 very fine plates. Priced throughout in pencil. Fine. Item #7781
A handsomely bound copy of this scarce catalogue, still very important. According to the introduction (translated): “The Amécourt collection is renowned above all others; no private collection can compare to it, and only the great national museums can rival it, yet we are convinced that this comparison would generally be to its advantage; formed with a more modern sensibility, it surpasses them in terms of condition and style... All these beautiful coins will be offered at public auction; it will be the most important sale of the century; such a collection will probably never be assembled again.” Babelon 227. Clain-Stefanelli 3688. Grierson 286. Spring 566 [also listed under “Most important sales of Roman Imperial coins” and “Most important sales of Byzantine coins”]. Ex Kolbe & Fanning’s May 2016 fixed price list; ex Kolbe & Fanning’s 2017 New York Book Sale, lot 25 (since rebound).
