AN ARRANGEMENT OF PROVINCIAL COINS, TOKENS, AND MEDALETS, ISSUED IN GREAT BRITAIN, IRELAND AND THE COLONIES, WITHIN THE LAST TWENTY YEARS; FROM THE FARTHING TO THE PENNY SIZE.

Ipswich: Printed by George Jermyn, 1798. First edition. 12mo, contemporary brown speckled English calf, gilt, the crowned arms of the Society of Writers to the Signet impressed in gilt in the center; professionally rebacked in tan morocco; original spine label, gilt; all page edges speckled. (24), 330, (2) pages; 3 engraved plates of tokens. Near fine. Item #7170

A landmark work. Conder’s Arrangement was the first substantial text book on 18th-century English tokens and was dutifully honored by having the series named after the author. It remained the standard catalogue on Conder tokens until it was replaced by Atkins a century later. This initial publication of Conder’s work in 1798 was met with such success as to require a second printing the following year, which is identical except for the different distributors’ information. Includes the preface by James Wright, which is a significant essay well worth reading. Manville 251.
