A very rarely encountered study of this father and son pair of Lyonnaise medalists. Marius Penin (1807–1880) was a well-regarded medallist who established a firm in Lyon that he passed to his son Ludovic Penin (1830–1868), who was named the Pontifical engraver in recognition of his religious medals, but who died young. This may be the only copy of this study that we have handled. Unlisted by Modesti (the main work or the supplement).
