An interesting account of an overland journey out west, including illustrations of an 1849 Mormon quarter eagle and a $54.09 F.D. Kohler ingot; also includes a description of early Oregon gold coins. Albert Deane Richardson (1833–1869) was among the best-known journalists of his era, though he ended up becoming better known for being shot by his lover’s husband shortly before she was able to obtain a divorce; the two were married on his deathbed.
