A biography of the famous settler John Augustus Sutter (1803–1880), the German-Swiss colonizer who landed in California in 1839 and began to plan a fortified settlement in the area of what is now Sacramento. Gold was discovered in January 1848 at Sutter’s Mill by his employee James W. Marshall, forever tying Sutter’s name to the Gold Rush that quickly ensued.
