A recent French translation of the first three books of Budé’s enormously important De asse et partibus ejus, first published in 1514 and recognized today as the first printed numismatic book. While the significance of Budé’s work, an extensive treatise on numismatic metrology that attempted to determine the circulating value of ancient Greek and Roman coins, remains well known today, Budé’s complex and often densely written Latin has kept the text from receiving the attention from today’s numismatists that might otherwise be the case. This translation into French of the 1541 edition by Luigi-Alberto Sanchi is a welcome addition to the classicist’s bookshelf.
