Racine: 1946. First (1947) edition, first printing. 12mo, original red cloth, gilt. 254, (2) pages; text illustrations. Binding well-preserved, with rather sharp corners and with gilt strong on the front cover and only slightly rubbed on the spine; mild spotting to page edges and occasional signs of storage in a humid environment on the pages. 1946-dated ownership inscription (name and address) on front pastedown. Very good or better, but looks nearly fine. Item #6041
The first printing of the first edition, with strong gilt on the front cover. Eighteen thousand copies of the first edition were issued, divided equally between the first and second printing. In the first printing, as here, the paragraph near the bottom of page 135 concludes with: “...the scarcity of this date.” The second printing concludes with: “...the scarcity of 1903 O.” This copy bears an original ownership signature, which is not always valued by collectors, but this one is dated December 23, 1946, demonstrating that this 1947 first edition was indeed distributed in 1946.
