Boston: Heath, 1864. First edition, no stated printing or imprint. Newman 1-P-20. 16mo, original blindstamped dark green cloth; front cover lettered in gilt, without price. 32 pages; 10 engraved plates of bank note design elements, with original tissue guards, interspersed in the text, with plate 6 serving as a frontispiece, plate 4 printed in red ink, plate 8 printed in green ink, an unnumbered plate being an engraved folding Heath bank note facsimile, and a final unnumbered plate being a folding facsimile of a counterfeit $5 Bank of Orleans note taken from captured engraved plates. Old damp-stain present throughout; still very good. Item #5578
Newman 1-P-20. An unusual issue. Eric P. Newman wrote of it that “This printing may be from handset type instead of stereotype.” It could have been issued at any time after Newman 1-P-3, as it includes the two unnumbered folding plates, but before Type 2-P. It is also the only variety of the first edition not printed throughout within double borders. The lack of a price on the front cover would suggest that it fell later in the lifetime of the first edition. Rare. Ex Eric P. Newman Library.
