For nearly 200 years, the standard early numismatic bibliography was J. G. Lipsius' 1801 Bibliotheca Numaria, containing 405 references to 16th century numismatic works. In this new bibliography, no less than 1148 titles are recorded, many unknown to Lipsius and his predecessors. Full bibliographical details are provided throughout and over 700 listings feature a title page facsimile.
The book is arranged in two main parts, followed by detailed indexes
of authors, translators, printers, publishers, plates and dates
of publication, and of libraries with significant holdings of
16th century numismatic material. The first part of the book consists
of critical analyses of the numismatic bibliographies compiled
by F. E. Brückmann (1729-1741), J. C. Hirsch (1760), and
J. G. Lipsius (1801). The second part comprises an alphabetical
catalogue of all 16th century numismatic books which Dr. Dekesel
was able to locate and analyze. Every listing features a detailed
physical description, including complete title with line breaks
and a detailed collation of text and plates. A monumental work
of considerable importance in fields beyond numismatics, including
classical scholarship, economics, iconography, history, and art.
