George Frederick Kolbe/Fine Numismatic Books reports that "Our November 14th, 2002 auction produced results considerably above expectations. The market for good books on ancient coins - or for key works in all fields for that matter - continues to be strong, and American rarities in the sale often brought record prices. 350 bidders participated in the auction; nearly 200 bid sheets arrived between November 12th and the 14th alone, via fax, email and telephone.

September 18, 2002
The upcoming November 14, 2002 auction conducted by George Frederick Kolbe/Fine Numismatic Books will be the most important offering of rare and out of print American numismatic literature to come to market since the firm's 1998-2000 sales of the landmark Harry W. Bass, Jr. Library. The auction features a quarter million dollars of important works on a wide range of topics, including ancient numismatics, Renaissance medals, and standard works on medieval and modern foreign coins and medals, particularly those of the Latin and Spanish American world. In the American field, over two dozen Chapman brother and Thomas Elder auction catalogues featuring original photographic plates are included. Many of these, from the Denis Loring library, are classic large cent sales. A number of standard works on large cents are also included, among them being Judge Joseph Sawicki's copy of Clapp's 1931 The United States Cents of the Years 1798-1799, and Chapman's work on 1794 cents.

April 26, 2002
The June 14, 2002 88th auction sale by George Frederick Kolbe/Fine Numismatic Books will feature Part Two of the John F. Bergman library, comprising 873 lots of notable works on ancient, foreign and American numismatic topics. Rare works on American numismatics from the Jeff Hosford library are also featured, as well as an important consignment of classic sale catalogues and works on ancient coins, and works on American paper money from the library of J. Roy Pennell, Jr. Many standard works on a wide range of numismatic subjects will be found in the 1242 lot sale catalogue, which is estimated to bring over $150,000. The catalogue is accessible at the firm's web site: www.numislit.com or illustrated catalogues may be obtained by sending $20.00 to Kolbe.

Sale highlights include a handsome set of the first 103 volumes of The Numismatist, 1888-1990, uniformly hardbound throughout (volumes 1-6 are in reprint); two handsomely illustrated sixteenth century works on coins (Panvinio's 1557 Fasti et triumphi Romanorum and Strada's 1553 Epitome); 1849 and 1850 Eckfeldt & Du Bois works featuring actual samples of California '49er gold; a very fine five volume set of Mazzini's Monete Imperiale Romane; a superb set of George Hill's 1930 Corpus of Italian Medals of the Renaissance; a handsome set of the prefered 1832-1737 French edition of Van Loon's Medallic History of the Netherlands; a handsome, inscribed set of the classic 1892 catalogue of the collection of Manual Vidal Quadras y Ramón; John Bergman's numismatic literature research files; a 1920 Elder catalogue of the Henry Miller sale, featuring 28 photographic plates; a complete reprint set of A Catalogue of Greek Coins in the British Museum, and a complete set of The Roman Imperial Coinage.

March 26, 2002
The March 22, 2002 auction sale of "Important Numismatic Books" conducted by George Frederick Kolbe/Fine Numismatic Books brought a total of nearly $248,000. The 1406 lots featured surplus works consigned by the Amercan Numismatic Society, the John S. Davenport Library, and other important properties. Included were consignors from Australia, Denmark, Ecuador, Israel, Italy, Puerto Rico, Yugoslavia, and sixteen states in the U. S.

Over 350 bidders combined to purchase nearly 90% of the lots offered in the sale. But a few highlights follow (prices quoted include the 10% buyers' premium):
The rare 1855 edition of John S. Dye's Bank Note Plate Delineator brought $2,640; a unique notebook on Vermont coppers, compiled by Edward Barnsley, was actively pursued, selling for $6,600 on a $2,500 estimate; a complete set of the Numismatic Chronicle, 158 volumes from 1836 to 1996, realized $13,750; antiquarian works on coins and medals were in great demand, and a 1636 numismatically-illustrated work on the lives of the Caesars brought $4,950 on a $1,500 estimate; a set of Koehler's 729-1765 Münz-Belustigung (Historical Coin Amusement), an early numismatic periodical, garnered a winning bid of $3,575; the magnificent 1694-1727 ten volume catalogue of ancient Roman coins in the Farnese Museum by Father Pedrusi was estimated to bring $2,500 but sold for $4,400; a fine copy of the first Ars Classica sale, the famous Pozzi collection, brought $660; the famous catalogue of the Hermann Weber collection of Greek coins sold for $1,815; a rare 1857 two volume catalogue by B. de Koehne of coins of the ancient Greek colonies in Russia brought $1,980 on a $1,000 estimate; one of the earliest substantially-illustrated works on 18th century British tokens, the 1795-1797 Virtuoso's Companion, went for $687; one of the highlights of the sale, Adolfo Herrera's 56 volume 1899-1910 Medallas Españolas, comprising over 2,900 rubbings of medals in a edition limited to only twelve sets, brought $12,650 on a $7,500 estimate; a very rare sample book, circa 1911, of medals available from the Lauer manufacturing firm of Germany realized $687 in heavy bidding; the John Davenport numismatic archives, offered in two lots, realized $4,950, and annotated copies of many of his works generally brought good prices; Christian Lange's classic work on the coins and medals of Schleswig-Holstein, estimated at $650, went for $1,100; a set of Numismatic Fine Arts auction catalogues brought $770 on a $350 estimate; the extensive collection of coin rubbings of British and British colonial coins prepared by W. W. Woodside was avidly pursued and finally sold for $2,640 on a $1,000 estimate; Walter Breen's U. S. Rare Coin Portfolio realized $770; a special interleaved copy of John Ford's re-issue of Browning's famous 1925 work on U. S. quarter dollars brought $715; Edward Maris' famous 1869 work on 1794 large cents went for $1,100. According to George Kolbe, the sale (except perhaps for the 1998-2000 Harry Bass Library auctions) was one of the most successful and highly competitive the firm has conducted in many years.

Those who wish to learn more about the sale may view the catalogue for the next few weeks at the firm's web site: www.numislit.com and can also review a complete prices realized list there. A limited number of copies of the illustrated catalogue with a printed prices realized list may be obtained by sending $20.00 to George Frederick Kolbe/Fine numismatic Books, P. O. Drawer 3100, Crestline, CA 92325. Part two of the John Bergman library and important American numismatic works from the library of Jeff Hosford will be featured in the firm's June 14, 2002 sale.
