Ex Thomas Ollive Mabbott. Featuring marginalia in pen and ink, French and English, mainly concerning coins in T.O.M.'s collection. Often interesting, Mabbott's observations include one on a Banias coin of Claudia, daughter of Nero: "J'ai une medaille peut-etre la meme que Patin a vu. T.O.M." Clain-Stefanelli 927. Robinson 458. Rare and still important.

A Paris: Chez Sebastien Cramoisy, 1627. First Edition. (28), 399, (25) pages (some mis-pagination as usual), woodcut title device, woodcut headpieces and initials. Quarto: 24 x 18 cm. Seventeenth century mottled calf, coat of arms of N. Nouet (three grape clusters arranged on a shield around a chevron supported by two hounds, surmounted by a coronet, all within an oval fillet) stamped in gilt on both covers, red morocco label, gilt, remaining spine compartments decorated in gilt, marbled endsheets, spine ends and corners a bit worn, tiny portion of title (blank) restored, early ownership inscription at head, occasional minor foxing. Fine. 550.00

Lipsius page 349. Renauldin pages 118-125. Engel et Serrure 5898: "Ouvrage assez savant pour son époque; la métallurgie numismatique y est traitée avec d'assez grands développements." Very scarce. One of the most important early French works on ancient coins, and the first to indicate rarity of Roman coins. Olivier notes that Nouet was an avocat au Parliament "célèbre par son talent" who died in 1699. Guignard notes that his descendant Jean-Jacques Nouet (1719-1746), a conseiller au Parliament, also used the same arms.

Purple ink return address stamp of A. M. Smith impressed twice on dedication leaf, dated March 18, 1885. Diminutive printed label of Lyman Low on front pastedown. This is apparently one of a number of antiquarian numismatic books utilized by Smith as a source of numismatic illustrations for his various publications on the topic. This copy features pencil annotations on two plates, presumably in Smith’s hand, including: "Doctor please take ab(o)ut 35 pair small & big it will take for Page of Cuts."
